Support Services: Literacy and Numeracy
Learning Assistance
The Special Education Coordinator and teachers provide extra assistance to students by support in the classroom, modification of tasks, or withdrawal from the regular class on occasion. The individual needs are identified and the required learning assistance is considered, and an appropriate intervention strategy created.
Identification
All new students to Bayview College are tested to help us identify any learning needs that students may have. The Special Education Coordinator organises the testing of all students, and any further testing that may required to identify learning difficulties or disabilities.
Referrals by parents and teachers are also considered, when identifying students who need extra assistance. Some students may receive assistance from an aide in the classroom, and support from the Special Eduction teacher.
Support Program:
- Modification of the assessment tasks of the regular class.
- Withdrawal from regular class for participation in special literacy & numeracy programs.
- In Years 7 – 9 there is the Lexia Reading Program for students of all levels to improve their English skills. Lexia Reading enhances core-reading programs with accelerated, independent reading skills practice. The Program strengthens reading proficiency for students who need practice in explicit reading skills and provides extended practice to develop foundational phonemic awareness and phonic skills.
- Extra assistance with literacy and numeracy is available from the Special Education teacher for students with learning disabilities.
