CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Bayview College seeks to promote excellence and challenge through a wide range of programs and activities. These are designed to broaden students' horizons and assist in their personal and social development.

A sample follows:

Faith and Values
Faith Education Seminars each term for students Years 8-11 are an integral component of the Faith and Values Education of Bayview College. There is wide participation in the seminars by the clergy of Portland and the teachers of the College. Each seminar has an information-research component, with emphasis through the day on activity-based contemporary application. Seminars conclude with a Prayer Service. Seminars have explored Easter (term one); Judaism, Christianity and Islam (term two); covenant figures from the Hebrew Scriptures (term three); Christmas (term four).
The modern program will emphasise contemporary moral issues, explored in the context of the Gospels and key figures of the Hebrew Scriptures.

Worship Profile
The College has regular Worship services, utilising the local centres of each of the six participating churches [Anglican, Catholic, Church of Christ, Baptist, Lutheran and Uniting] and Faith and Values is a part of the core curriculum. The College chapel is also used for weekly staff prayer and irregular class sessions.

Sport
The College participates in all the local school sporting competitions and provides opportunities for students to attend Local, Regional and State trials. In addition the College is also a member of ICCES [Independent Country Co-educational Schools] which provides high level competition in a range of sports and activities.

Performing Arts Program.
The Performing Arts Program includes Core content at Years 7 and 8 with Electives at Years 9 and 10 and Theatre studies at VCE. Performance is an integral part of this program and events are staged both for the school community and other local schools. Performance aims to integrate the skills of dance, drama and music. Private Music tuition is also available on demand. A bi-annual school musical/drama performance is a cornerstone of the program.

Debating, Public Speaking and Student Government
Students are encouraged to take part in the public speaking and debating program and, through their representatives, all students have "a say" in the affairs of the College.

Creative Problem-solving and Tournament of Minds
At every opportunity, we encourage students to challenge themselves. The above two tournaments are English and Mathematics oriented and are run between schools across the state but our students also compete in many other subject-oriented competitions.

Excursions
Regular cultural excursions are a feature of many at the College. Staff develop theme-days relating curriculum to student experiences on excursions. Occasional extended excursions are planned, including bi-annual trips to Japan, and the College has developed a sister school relationship with Sumita High School in Japan.
